"I would like to start by just saying, “WOW!”. There is so much content here that I look forward to going back again and again to learn and refresh. The teachers have such wisdom with yoga and anatomy. It was so great to have experienced and well-rounded instructors give instruction in a way that was not over my head nor was it too simple. In my personal practice, I was able to gain a deeper understanding of how certain things felt in my own body. The verbal and physical cues taught are clear and concise which helped me with my language while teaching and made the anatomy something much easier to comprehend. The live calls were great, and most of all I really enjoyed all the video content. Learning in person is incredible, but there is something so reassuring and worth while about being able to revisit the nuggets of knowledge over, and over again. I would recommend this program to others in a heartbeat. I have already told a bunch of people what I was doing and they were all really intrigued! Thank you again Soma Yoga Institute! This course has been 1000% worth the time and investment."

Yes, definitely.  Skeptical?  We were too.  However, the Soma Yoga Institute teaching team has been leading teacher trainings for over a decade.  Our curriculum is well-developed, time tested, and established.  We have taken our live program online as the content is of incredible high value and will bring great benefit to those who wish to deepen their own practice, and/or teach others as well as those who already teach who wish to refine and enhance their offerings to better serve their students.  Our anatomy informed adaptive approach is not easily found in other programs. Our teaching skill section is designed that if you practice, and practice, and practice some more we are certain you will be ready, confident and equally skilled as a new teacher as those who take the in person trainings.

A recent graduate of the online course wrote to us and said:

My life is forever changed. Prior to this training, I believed I was disciplined and had my life on lock down. It took about 5 mins to realize I hadn’t come to this training to teach, I had come to learn how to stop hurting myself. I lived my entire life up until this training, bringing so much needless suffering to myself and others. I learned what sacred devotion to myself, my life and my growth actually looks like. I also learned what it really meant to keep my ball of awareness on my partner and my friends. I learned to slow down and get curious about EVERYTHING in my own personal practice. When I started this program, I was the 60 mins, sweaty vinyasa-kill yourself or you’re not accomplishing anything person. Now my practice is whatever my mind and body need that day. Just that is so powerful; to ask myself what I need right now, and have the tools and awareness to follow the answer.

As far as my confidence as a teacher; I feel 100% confident that I can keep students aligned, safe and breathing to the best of their ability.

The level of instruction and mentoring I received is unparalleled. I told the group today in the Tapas class, that if any of them had checked in with me mid-july after my meniscus tear (from a sports accident), they would’ve probably all bet on me not completing this training. It’s a testament to you as instructors and your curriculum, that I was able to utilize the information in the course to heal my body in an extremely short amount of time. No pills, no surgery. In addition to my own personal experience, I have spoken with so many yoga instructors who went through other certifications and came out on the other end feeling as if they had no foundation in anatomy or alignment, or various other pieces of knowledge. I feel walking away from this course that I have a solid foundation to keep people safe, help them feel successful and help them breathe. What more could I ask for? :)

I would love to add that as a student, I was so moved with appreciation that all of the teachers were so actively "in it" with us. They came up with additional things to support us on the fly after receiving feedback. And those ideas obviously added hours on to their day as the facilitators. I never felt like I was on my own to figure it out, and I never felt like any teachers were put out by us needing additional help.

Thank you for supporting me throughout this journey. I am forever grateful to you and eternally changed by the past few months. I feel like I just woke up, or someone turned my switch on. It’s a whole new view, a completely new way of living and being. Thank you for the work you do. I can’t imagine my life without the knowledge and tools I am walking away from this experience with.

-Rondi Spurling

We do have empowerment reviews (quizzes), written reflections, relevant assignments, and practice teach elements woven into the curriculum. These are established for you to process the information, gain practical skills, and for us to help clarify any material that seems confusing. We understand that everyone has a different learning style and our curriculum is offered in a compassionate way.

To receive authorization with Yoga Alliance as RYT-200, quizzes and exams are a required part of your curriculum. You will find quizzes sprinkled throughout after the videos to empower your learning. Quiz retakes are allowed if the first time through you do not receive a passing grade. Also expect a “take home-open book” final exam as well as a final 30 minute teaching practicum via zoom. The written final exam is graded on a pass/re-do basis. There are short answers, an essay or a video substitution for the essay, and a pose study on the final.

Out of the 200 hours of study required to graduate approximately 120 hours are video lessons which include lectures as well as yoga asana practices, meditations, and deep relaxations.  30 hours consists of required group calls. The remaining 50 hours is designated for required reading, practice teach exercises, quizzes, class assignments, practicum preparation and delivery, and the final exam.

Please do not let the Yoga Alliance policy of "grading" stand in your way. We will prep you well (our promise to you), and you will all do just fine (trust in yourself).  We are here to support your success.

There are two primary organizations to become familiar with.  Yoga Alliance https://www.yogaalliance.org/ and the International Association of Yoga Therapists https://www.iayt.org/.

Yoga Alliance is a registry that registers Yoga Teachers with the following designations RYT 200, E-RYT 200, RYT 500 and E-RYT 500.  The RYT stands for Registered Yoga Teacher.  The 200 indicates that you have completed a 200 hour yoga training that meets their curriculum requirements.  The E indicates that at the 200 level the teacher has instructed over 1000 hours of classes.  The E-RYT 500 indicates that the yoga teacher has completed 200 + 300 hours of study in a program that meets their curriculum requirements and has instructed over 2000 hours.  This is the highest designation that Yoga Alliance recognizes.  Please note that Yoga Alliance is not a certifying body but just a registration. All of Soma Yoga Institute's teachers are E-RYT 500 registered.

C-IAYT is a designation authorized by the International Association of Yoga Therapists.  This organization is a certifying body.  The path to becoming a Yoga Therapist is much more in-depth and requires 1000 hours of study as well as a mentored practicum. This 200-hour Yoga Teacher Training will apply to the first 200 hours of your 1000-hour yoga therapy degree.  Many of the faculty at Soma Yoga Institute are C-IAYT certified.

You will receive a 200 hour yoga teaching certificate through Soma Yoga Institute and be eligible to register with Yoga Alliance as an RYT-200 if the following time line is met: 1) All students have 8 months from their cohort start date to complete the program for certification through Soma Yoga Institute. While there is lifetime access to the materials, the window for certification expires after 8 months.  Students may apply for an additional 2 month extension if they were not able to meet the initial deadline. These are granted at no cost if there is evidence of extenuating circumstances. If a student needs to extend beyond this timeline (8 months+ 2 months) students may re-enroll in the 200 Hour Online YTT for an additional 6 months for a fee of $497USD.

Please note: Soma Yoga Institute is registered with Yoga Alliance, ID #143150.  We have graduated over 500 students and we invite you to read their direct reviews on this site: https://www.yogaalliance.org/SchoolProfileReviews?sid=3952 . We are a top rated school with a 9.5/10 NPS score.  In addition, all of our faculty are registered with Yoga Alliance at their highest level, E-RYT 500. Many of our faculty are also C-IAYT Yoga Therapists recognized through the International Association of Yoga Therapists.
Our school has been authorized to offer 200 hour and 300 hour yoga teacher trainings online through Yoga Alliance and meet the new requirements.

Our business yoga teaching section will give you all the tools you need to get started and build a career as a yoga teacher.
